A presentation and discussion will inaugurate the Ensaneyoun Educational Salon series.
Event Title: How do elections work in Canada?
📅 Sunday, Feb 23rd, 2025
🕒3:00 PM to 7:00 PM
📍Frank McKechnie Community Center. 310 Bristol Rd E, Mississauga, ON, Room A
Guest Speaker: Dr. Walid El Khachab, Professor of Arabic Studies and Comparative Literature at York University, Toronto, is also the Director of the Arab Research Center in Canada. He has authored numerous research papers on literature, cinema, and Islam in their interaction with history and contemporary culture. He is also the author of the book, Engineer of Joy, which explores the life of the Egyptian comedic actor, Fouad El-Mohandes.
Seminar Summary: The discussion centered on Sheikh Ali Abdel Razek's groundbreaking 1925 book, Islam and the Foundations of Governance. This controversial book was published shortly after the fall of the Ottoman Caliphate, and it argued that the concept of Caliphate had no basis in Islamic scripture but was merely a form of worldly power. Sheikh Ali wrote powerfully that "the throne rises only upon human heads" and "the crown has no life except what it takes from human lives." For these views, he faced severe consequences: expelled from the Council of Senior Scholars, fired from his position as judge, and barred from future religious or civil posts. This harsh treatment served two purposes: protecting Sultan Ahmed Fuad's ambitions to become “Caliph” and preserving the privileges of Al-Azhar's religious establishment. The seminar concluded with a hope that Egypt might break free from this historical pattern and truly embrace a secular civil state.
This session was followed by a question-answer period.

📍Hazel McCallion Central Library, Mississauga, Room 2A, Second Floor
Guest Speaker: Madhat M. Ghabrial, an Egyptian Canadian author residing in Ontario, presented a summary and brief analysis of his first memoir/novel. This book was published in Canada and in Egypt—in English and Arabic.
Seminar Summary: The memoir recalls the events of 1970s Cairo during a tumultuous period when Egypt's first secular dictator, Gamal Abdel Nasser, had just died, and the once-popular secular movement was gradually giving way to religiosity and fanaticism.
The narrative, combining nostalgia with profound disappointment, centers on an underground bar where secularists gathered to discuss politics. As religious influence grew throughout the 1970s and 1980s, this bar slowly disappeared, becoming a lost symbol of a bygone era—a time of poetry, freedom, and unfulfilled yearnings for a secular democracy.
The literary presentation concluded with a question-and-answer session and book signing.
